ARTICLE
I saw this article on Psych Central which says teenagers into music are more likely to be depressed than those who read books. http://psychcentral.com/news/2011/04/05/teens-more-into-music-than-reading-more-likely-to-be-depressed/25036.html It's not clear whether depressed people listen to music to escape or if it leads to depression, or both.
MY TAKE ON IT
I find this interesting. For me, music helps you connect to your emotions and often enhances the emotions you are feeling. Books take you to another world. They transport us. They also help you get into other characters heads.
Understanding what other people go through emotionally is a real help to understanding ourselves.
POSITIVE BEING
Clinical depression needs to be looked at professionally. However we can do some things to help us feel more positive when we're a bit down.
Work out what helps you be positive. Is it reading a book, dancing, seeing friends, exercising or meditation? What helps you be positive?
Do a self assessment: Do we need more sleep, more time to ourselves or do we need to look at our stress levels? Do we need to change the way we're doing something in our lives?
Being self aware is also key. What words are we using are they negative or positive? What tone are we using is it aggressive or positive? What is our mind chatter - is it supporting us or undermining us? We can choose to use positive words, a positive tone and supporting mind talk.
These small things that we choose can help us climb up the positive ladder rather than slide down the negative spiral.
